Maodian Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
middle Cretaceous, K2 md, (39b)

Province:
Jiangxi

Type Locality and Naming

South and eastern Jiangxi (Ganzhou Basin). The name of Maodian Formation was given by the Geological Survey Team of Jiangxi in 1994. The type locality is at the Chenkeng section of Maodian in the Ganxian County of Jiangxi (115º00'18″, 25º55'12″).

Synonym: Maokoudian Fm (?)

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is mostly composed of brownish red conglomerate and sandy conglomerate, with intercalations of siltstone, mudstone, yielding basalt and tuff locally. The thickness ranges from 640 m to 1839 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Conglomerate

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The formation traditionally shown as unconformable contacts onto the Lengshuiwu Fm or Gaotan Fm; however Li et al. (2019) indicate that it is not overlying the Lengshuiwu Fm.

Upper contact

The formation conformably contacts with the overlying Zhoutian Fm.

Regional extent

It occurs in Huichang and Longnan areas.

Fossils

The formation yields charophytes Flabellochara hangzhouensis, Peckisphaera cf. verticillata, Atopochara trivolvis, Sphaerochara raricostata, Songliaochara sp. , and dinosaur egg Elongatoolithus sp.

Age

Shown as latest Aptian-early Albian by Xi et al (2019; Cretaceous integrated stratigraphy and timescale of China); but "In southern Jiangxi Province, the Ganzhou Group contains bimodal basaltic andesite-rhyolite association of the Maodian Formation (K12md) exposed in the Huichang and Xinjiang basins, and their ages are 93–105 Ma (Wu et al., 2014; Xie et al., 2006; Li et al., 1989)." [quote from Xing, G.F., et al., 2021, "Mesozoic-Cenozoic volcanic cycle … East China". Jour. Earth Sci.)] = late Albian – Cenomanian
